This course is an exploration of the creative aspect of graphic design in order to gain an appreciation of advertising as used in our society. Students do not need to be familiar with operating systems or with applications used as this course is designed to develop technical, artistic and conceptual skills. Key components of this course are a development of technical skill in Photoshop and traditional design craftsmanship; exploration of the elements and principles of design; art critiquing; conceptual problem solving; appreciation of the history of advertising and cultures; application of advertising mediums in order to communicate an idea and/or motivate a viewer to action. Projects will include (but not limited to) typography as an art form, logo design, book cover design (illustration), posters, magazine ad design, brochure design, CD jacket and advertising campaigns. Students will develop digital portfolios as part of their second semester grade as well as prints for display. Students will be earning credit for a year-long art course which will provide them with learning experiences that follow the California State Standards for Visual and Performing Arts.
